Factory is spending thousands to reduce noise Then in 1965 - A Guisborough clothing factory is spending thousands of pounds to reduce a noise which residents in nearby Norfolk Close claim is ruining their peace and quiet. A spokesman for the firm which employs 500, appealed to the residents to have patience. “We are replacing our old machinery, but this cannot be done overnight. We are aware that the old machines are noisy and have caused annoyance, but when the new plant is installed it will be much quieter and cleaner.” But the patience of residents is running out, and Mrs Marion Greaves of 65 Norfolk Road is organising a fresh campagne to stop the noise. Mr Albert Mills, a shift worker claimed the noise was infuriating. “It often starts at 4-40 a.m.. We have protested about it many times, now something has got to be done about it.” Mr Locklin Edward Harrison of Redcar Road Guisborough, grabbed one of the culprits and marched him into his garage, and sprayed him with black paint. One can only assume he made a good job of it for Harrison is a master painter and decorator. Inspector Jack Harness prosecuting said that eight year old Stephen John Aspin of Grammar School House, had been playing with other boys at the rear of Harrisons premises in Redcar Road Guisborough. Harrison had got hold of the boy, the son of a Grammar School master, and sprayed him. Harrison pleaded not guilty and was fined ten pounds for assault. Now in 1999 - Guisborough Shirt Factory closed its doors for the last time this year with a loss of hundreds of jobs. This article appeared in the August 1999 edition of Now
