| Derek sets out for adventure
Then in 1964 - It was the understatement of the year when Derek Whiting remarked that it was going to be a bit of a walk. The journey he was about to undertake was a 12,000 mile hitch hike between Stokesley and Adelaide in Australia. It had taken 18 months hard saving , six weeks intensive planning and four vaccinations to get this 28 year old former postman on his way. His outward journey will take in France, Switzerland, Italy and Greece. He plans to hit Istanbul by June, then onward to Teheran, India and Ceylon. From there he intends taking a boat to Perth and Adelaide. Why the trip? “Let’s call it a spirit of adventure and a keen desire to see the world.” said Derek who lives in Ormesby. His journey will not be on a shoestring however. He has deposited funds in various banks on route. And when he arrives he has a job lined up -as a postman of course.
