| There was a mill by the stream in Great Ayton Then in 1950 - The River Leven has always proved a focal point for visitors to Great Ayton. They enjoy picknicking along its banks on Low Green, and children paddle in its benign waters and feed the ducks.
Few are aware however that as late as 1950, a second water course wended its way through the village starting the waterfall opposite Sugetts ice cream shop, and winding its path through land now occupied by the Hollygarth retirement flats and down to Mill Terrace behind the Buck Inn.
