Then in the 60's - Corporation Road at the junction of Albert Road in 1966. The Corporation Hotel in the left foreground, was Middlesbrough’s leading hotel in the post war years. On entering the main door, there was a small cocktail bar on the right and a large main lounge on the left and a further smaller lounge to the right of the reception desk. Note the public Bar entrance at the corner of the building. The shoe shop of Freeman hardy and Willis can be seen on the right of the picture with Binns store in the far background.
On the immediate left is Sparks Cafe a popular meeting place in the 1950/60’s for morning coffee and lunch. Its large function rooms were regularly used for evening functions, and Middlesbrough Rotary Club held their weekly luch time meetings there. It is interesting to compare the elegant architecture of the Burton’s building with the stark box like post war structure of British Home Stores.
Albert Road opposite the Town Hall where from the left is the solicitor’s office of Miles Hutchinson and Lithgow.Hector Powe the gents tailors, Hamblin the optians, Bell and Dyson gents hairdressers, Guymer the fruitier, an unidentified TV shop, and Charles Clinkard the shoe shop. The tall building on the right is the Corporation Hotel.
