Then in 1963 - One of Middlesbrough’s older double-decker buses was badly damaged when the driver failed to observe flashing warning lights and tried to drive it under the town’s Albert Bridge. An inquiry also revealed that the bus had a disc in the cab warning drivers that it was too big to get under the bridge.
Fortunately this “workman special” on its way to a local steelworks, was empty at the time. The driver and conductor were shaken but unhurt. The driver was later sacked.
